Resilience, innovation and partnership.

Insider views of twenty years of growth at SMBC Aviation Capital by people who have been with us all the way.

20 years of success – celebrating our anniversary

Jacqueline McFadden | Head of Customer Management

Start Date May 2002

I feel privileged to work with a great team and to have experienced many challenges and opportunities along the way; from crises including SARS and COVID-19, to the growth of the business and the change in ownership in 2012 following the global financial crisis. Our 20-year track record gives us the perspective to see through shorter-term cycles. Mindful that our success is dependent on the health of the societies in which we operate, making a positive contribution has always been one of our key long-term objectives. This year we expanded our CSR footprint by increasing donations and support for our charity partners. We are rightly regarded as a premier employer and developer of the widest bench of talent and we are committed to increasing the diversity of our business and the wider sector.

What will change over the next 20 years?

Shane Wilson | SVP The Nest

Start Date January 2007

This is the industry’s switch from analogue to digital, with new technologies reducing our environmental impact and a more thoughtful consumer base encouraging the industry to act. We will see the acceleration of new aircraft designs, as well as new fuel solutions that will change the long-established norms of our industry. On the critical issue of sustainability, we believe the leasing sector will play a key enabling role in helping the industry achieve a transition to more sustainable technologies and we are committed to working with our customers, aircraft manufacturers and other stakeholders to deliver positive and enduring change.

Delivering for our customers in extraordinary times

Amy Li | SVP Aircraft Trading

Start Date February 2011

SMBC Aviation Capital has continued to stay close to its customers through this challenging year, holding a lantern to find a path, for both us and our customers. We are confident that we can help our customers emerge stronger and we consistently work with them to find constructive solutions. Many challenges remain, but we are certain that we will conquer any obstacles in our path to emerge stronger, together.

Aviation as a positive contributor to the global economy

David Swan | Chief Operating Officer

Start Date June 2002

Video calls are a good replacement for telephone calls but will never replace genuine human interaction. We survive through human interaction and we thrive through experiencing new things and discovering new places. That’s why air travel is a vital facilitator of living in a global village, bringing people together and driving economies forward. The key challenge for all of us is to ensure it is done in a sustainable way and I am proud that SMBC Aviation Capital is at the forefront of our industry in this regard.

Resilience in adversity throughout 2020

Catharine Ennis | Chief Legal Officer

Start Date June 2002

COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented market dislocation which has had a deep impact on every aspect of our industry including airlines and lessors. However, despite these challenges SMBC Aviation Capital’s inherent strengths and swift response means that it is well placed to emerge from the crisis backed by our supportive Japanese Shareholders and led by our experienced senior management team. Our overarching priority since the onset of the pandemic has been to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our employees across the globe. Well positioned to support, and benefit from the recovery of the sector

Brian Harvey | Chief Marketing Officer

Start Date June 2002

With the successful roll-out of vaccination programs in several countries, the market recovery is underway and we are seeing a resurgence in demand for aircraft from our airline clients, underpinned by demand for consumer and business air travel. With our strong capital base and our young, fuel efficient fleet we are capitalizing on opportunities to fund aircraft delivering to our clients through sale and lease-back transactions, from our portfolio, as well as from our Airbus and Boeing order-books, to help our customers achieve their re-fleeting and growth goals. Over the past 20 years SMBC Aviation Capital has been supporting the airline community with capital and aircraft to modernize and grow their fleets. Emerging from the pandemic, we are exceptionally positioned to assist our customers and continue to grow our portfolio of modern aircraft on lease to valued clients.
