IT Internship

Overview of the Team and Role

SMBC Aviation Capital has undergone significant growth over the past number of years.

In parallel, SMBC Aviation Capital has undergone a major IT transformation project consisting of a complete re-engineering of the infrastructure, backend process, systems and a data consolidation and validation initiative. The SMBC Aviation Capital IT Team of highly skilled and experienced IT professionals are responsible for the ongoing support and development of the new ICT landscape in addition to supporting day to day business operations.

Over the past number of years SMBC Aviation Capital have selected a small number of high-flying graduates looking for opportunities in the fast-paced, global and dynamic business of aircraft leasing. This year one of the successful candidates will join the SMBC Aviation Capital IT Team.

Vice President - Credit Risk - APAC Region

Overview of Credit Risk Team and Role

The successful candidate, based in Hong Kong, will be part of a global team of 12 analysts.

The Credit Risk team is an integral part of the on-going risk management of SMBC-AC's global portfolio. The role of the Credit Risk team can be broken into three broad areas:

1. New transactions – assess counterparty risk; internal credit process

2. Portfolio management – monitor/manage credit risk, “avoid surprises”

3. Monitor and debate analysis of general macro and competitive environment

Given the specialised technical nature and cyclicality of our customers’ underlying business, there is a need to have dedicated professionals who understand the aviation business to conduct the credit risk process. This internal skill set ensures that SMBC-AC is able to achieve a fast turnaround for approving transactions but also deal with specific airline issues in a timely fashion.

The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring airlines and the aviation environment in the APAC region. Delivering insights on the general market dynamic and on specific airline issues as they arise is a key element of this role, as is building a network of relationships (customers and non-customers) to further inform these views.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse individual airlines both quantitatively and qualitatively for the purposes of assessing their suitability for new business and use this analysis to actively take a role in the decision making process on new transactions within the Deal Team process
  • Conduct on-site due diligence meetings with airline customers and prepare all necessary internal approval documentation (including Credit Applications & Annual Reviews) for new, existing or restructuring transactions
  • Liaise with all necessary internal departments within the business and its shareholders to ensure appropriate approvals are obtained for all transactions, and lead the credit approval process for these transactions as required
  • Monitor existing and potential airline customers and their markets for the purposes ofensuring that there are “no surprises” with regard to their credit quality
  • Prepare ad hoc reports / notes / other papers as required

Qualifications & Experience

  • At least 3-5 years’ experience in credit/ equity analysis (in a given sector of expertise), preferably in the APAC region, taking a macro view of the sector as well as a micro view of an individual company/ customer
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English
  • Knowledge of the aviation sector and an ability to discuss the market dynamic and future shape of the airline sector per region would be advantageous
  • Broad understanding of aviation lease and finance transaction structures (operating leasing, sale & leaseback, commercial debt) desirable
  • Strong problem solving and financial skills including an ability to read, interpret and critically analyse financial accounts
  • Qualifications such as CPA, CFA or a MBA are desirable
  • Proven track record working in a fast paced, dynamic, service orientated environment
  • High competency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

Business Analyst

Overview of Role

SMBC Aviation Capital (SMBC AC) is looking for a highly motivated business analyst with a strong commercial mind-set to join our Finance team. The role is based in Dublin and reports to the SVP Financial Operations.


Our principal activity is leasing and trading aircraft, with a clear focus on young commercial jet aircraft of the types most popular with our customers. This has allowed us to deliver 17 consecutive years of growth and profitability. The role represents a unique opportunity for candidates with vision, energy and ambition to make their contribution to our transactions, work within a multi-disciplinary organisation and deepen and extend their commercial acumen.


Overall, as well as having an opportunity to work with the many core disciplines within SMBC AC, the role provides an excellent vantage point from which to see and understand all aspects of our transactions.

Finance

The Finance team is responsible for providing management and financial information to and between the business and three key stakeholders:

  • Senior management
  • Shareholders
  • Third party stakeholders such as auditors, regulators and tax advisors

This particular role is an accounting role with a responsibility for ensuring the appropriate accounting for our leasing and associated transactions in the General Ledger.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the financial operations team to ensure that the leasing and associated transactions are being recorded appropriately in the general ledger each month
  • Performing reconciliations on a monthly basis
  • Performing ad hoc data analysis and review
  • Reviewing and performing tasks ensuring that they adhere to the internal controls framework
  • Suggesting and implementing operational efficiencies, including cross-functional initiatives
  • Relevant honours degree together with a recognised accounting qualification.
  • Strong IFRS accounting experience
  • 1+ years post qualified accounting experience in a finance function
  • Experience delivering quality output whilst working to tight deadlines
  • Proven track record working in a fast paced, dynamic, service orientated environment
  • Knowledge of the aviation industry, aircraft leasing or asset management advantageous
  • Experience with Microsoft Navision or equivalent GL/ERP system, Microsoft Office, Jet Reports

Document Manager

Overview of Role

An opportunity exists for a Document Manager to join an experienced team responsible for Document Management activities in the company. In this role, you will manage the tracking and processing of all closing documentation related to all new transactions, as well as maintaining documentation related to a large existing portfolio.

You will also work on specific projects related to particular transactions and also in relation to Document Management system and process changes. You will report to the Head of Transaction Execution and work allocation will be set and overseen by the VP of Document Management.

Key Responsibilities

Transaction Documentation:

- The tracking and processing of closing documentation for all new deals.

- Following business activity closely to ensure all transactions are tracked through to execution and then to completion of documentation.

- Liaising with external counsel, customers and internal teams to ensure a complete and correct set of documents is received within agreed timelines.

- Processing of softcopy and original documents to internal standards.

- Tracking outstanding items and escalating issues as appropriate.

- Monitoring delivery times for external counsel, internal approval and completion of each case by Document Management.

- Management of original chain of title documents for the portfolio.

- Fielding queries on documentation status from internal teams.

- Supporting internal teams in the process of novating/selling aircraft – review of lease documentation confidentiality provisions and release of copy and/or original documentation to relevant parties.

Project Support:

- Supporting DM on ongoing and future projects. For example:

- Development of a new, customized Document Management workflow collaboration with in house and external IT expertise

- Deal Documentation Project

- Portfolio transactions

- Other system/process improvements

Audit:

- Responding to audit requests from internal and external auditors.

- Supplying copies of documentation via data site.


Qualifications & Experience

- Preferably, a third level qualification (Business, Accounting, Law or Engineering)

- 1-2 years preferably in a banking / insurance / financial services environment

- Ideally, experience in processing and filing business critical original documentation

- Ideally, experience in dealing with aviation leasing documentation desirable

Purpose of the role:

Vice President or Senior Vice President (depending on experience) based in the Americas, this position will be a key role within the SMBC Aviation Capital (SMBC AC) Technical Asset Management (TAM) Team and its support to our Americas based business opportunities.

The Technical Asset Management team is responsible for:

  1. Providing timely and competent technical support to SMBC AC teams including our Origination, Aircraft Trading and other functions within the business.
  2. Negotiation of all technical aspects of transactions with respect to SMBC AC’s fleet of owned, managed and debt financed aircraft.
  3. Project management of all technical/OEM/MRO/BFE work undertaken on SMBC AC’s fleet to facilitate our overall business objectives including aircraft transition project management.
  4. Oversight and active asset management of the technical condition of the SMBC AC fleet including inspections, technical due diligence on airline clients, approval of maintenance work and associated reserve claims.
  5. Scheduled and unscheduled redelivery and re-leasing of assets at the expiry of their leases.
  6. Managing the technical aspects of our owned and managed assets throughout their life cycle.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging with industry participants to ensure SMBC AC remain current with all aspects of the aircraft asset management function.
  • Negotiation of LOI’s/ Leases for new and used aircraft to ensure the highest standards of asset protection are enshrined in all deals.
  • Engaging with Airframers and other OEM’s and MRO’s as necessary to facilitate aircraft deliveries and redeliveries.
  • Project manage aircraft redeliveries including budgeting, contractor management, customer liaison, Airworthiness Authority liaison and MRO control and direction to have on-time, on-budget project management.
  • Interface with other departments within the SMBC AC organisation to enhance the understanding and measurement of the risks associated with aircraft ownership.
  • Assist in setting airframe maintenance reserve rates through the Maintenance Review Board process and monitor the exposure associated with fleet maintenance and operational issues.
  • Manage various maintenance events from work-scope through final invoice payment and processing of related maintenance reserve claims for owned and managed aircraft.
  • Engage, direct and project manage consultants working on behalf of SMBC AC and ensure the contractor base has the best talent available in the market.
  • Represent SMBC AC at industry and OEM conferences ensuring an effective agenda is set to maximise the return to the business.
